Otselic Valley Ski Club
Information and Expectations
The Otselic Valley Ski Club will be skiing at Labrador Mountain on THURSDAYS this winter beginning the week of January 6, 2025. Ski club is open to any Otselic Valley student in grades 5 - 12 who wishes to ski or snowboard. Mrs. Meade is the Ski Club Advisor this school year and Mrs. Graham will be chaperoning.
The School Group Program at Labrador Mountain lasts 6 weeks and includes 4 weeks of lessons. If transportation is available and the weather permits, we may extend the length of this program. Students may store their ski/snowboard gear in Mrs. Meade’s room (108) or their classroom each Thursday.
Students will meet in Mrs. Meade’s room at dismissal to wait for the bus. No student will be permitted to leave school grounds between dismissal and when the bus leaves at 3:15 p.m.
Transportation will be provided by the school each Thursday to take students to Labrador Mountain. The bus will leave after dismissal, at approximately 3:15 p.m. The bus will leave Labrador Mountain at approximately 8:30 p.m. and will return to school at approximately 9:00-9:15 p.m. If you prefer to pick your child up at Labrador Mountain, please arrive no later than 8:15 p.m. as we will be loading the bus by 8:30 p.m. A sign-out sheet will be available for you to sign your child out and you must come into the lodge to do so.
Lessons will be held the first 4 weeks of the program at no additional cost and must be reserved when you sign up. Most students like to take the earlier lesson. It is recommended that each student takes lessons regardless of their ability and experience. The Otselic Valley Ski Club requires all beginner and second-year skiers and snowboarders to take lessons, All members are encouraged to take advantage of the small group lessons which are taught by ski instructors employed by Labrador Mountain. Groups are formed based on experience, from beginner to advanced. Beginner skiers/snowboarders are not permitted to ride the chair lifts and will remain on the beginner hill until their ski instructor has indicated they are ready to advance.
IMPORTANT: While Labrador Mountain does not require students to wear helmets, all students who ski or snowboard with the Otselic Valley Ski Club MUST wear a helmet. If your child does not have their own helmet, they are available to rent at an additional cost at sign up. Please note, the cost of a rental helmet for one season is comparable to purchasing your own helmet.
Winter weather attire is expected and includes a warm jacket, snowpants, hats (without a pom pom to fit snugly under a helmet), gloves or mittens, and warm socks. Tall socks are preferred to ensure comfort in ski or snowboard boots. Dressing in layers is recommended as the temperature can vary significantly from the time we get there to the time we leave. Scarves are not recommended as they can get caught in ropes and lifts. Ski goggles and balaclavas/face masks are ideal to have as they help protect the face and neck areas from the wind and weather.
Your child’s ski pass will be valid for the entire season (on Thursdays only) at Labrador Mountain, including any Thursday before Ski Club begins and any Thursday after Ski Club ends as long as the mountain is open. Parents/guardians will be responsible for transportation and supervision on any of those days outside of the OV Ski Club program. In the event there is an emergency school closure or if all after-school activities are cancelled on a Ski Club day, Ski Club will be cancelled. Labrador Mountain will work with clubs to reschedule a make-up date.
If your child forgets their ski/snowboard pass, there will be a fee to get a temporary pass – 1st time: $5, 2nd time: $25, 3rd time: full ticket price. It is important that their pass is securely attached to their coat or snowpants each week. There is a replacement fee of $25 for a lost pass.
Labrador Mountain offers an optional meal plan when you sign up for the school group program. Please see the pricing sheet (attached) for more information and costs. Additional menu items are also available for purchase at the lodge. Cash and debit/credit cards are accepted. Your child can pack food/snacks/drinks from home as an alternative to buying food at Labrador Mountain.
Parents/guardians and younger siblings (in grades 3 or 4) may also sign up through the school group program to ski/snowboard at a discounted rate. A parent/guardian must be present at Labrador Mountain each week to supervise and be the responsible adult of any child younger than 5th grade.
