There is a reason Mr. Roy’s 6th grade STE(A)M class was literally buzzing this morning.Vikings chose from among self-directed projects and kits, some of which included motor sensors, electronic circuits, and even boxing robots. This work was an opportunity to learn new technologies and even innovate by making something new with found materials.Truthfully, engineering education can also sound like frustration when things don’t go right the first time. This morning some students noticed kit instructions were written in another language, and that wasn’t helpful at all.  What could they do besides give up and try something else? They found a simple, workable solution:  pull up a translation app on a smartphone, turn the unfamiliar script to English, and keep going.PRO-TIP. The acronym STEM is often familiar when talking about 21st century education – it stands for Science-Technology-Engineering-Math – but what’s the “A” in STEAM? It’s Art! If you look closely you’ll see some students approaching their tasks with art in mind.Congratulations, Vikings, for using your own two hands to experiment and learn.
