We are so very sorry to share news of the passing of Mr. James L. Dutton, who died in his sleep in the South Otselic home in which he was born. His 91 years were spent in a lifetime of giving to this community, including students. A member of the Class of 1947, Mr. Dutton went on to teach school here for 28 years, direct the summer recreation program for 22 years where he taught hundreds of students to swim in the Otselic River, and coach assorted school athletic teams. Sports fans will also remember his announcing the OV basketball games from 1971 to 2011. It is fitting that the site of so many athletic competitions  behind our school was officially named the James L. Dutton Athletic Field by the Board of Education in 2005. In 2010, Mr. Dutton was also named to the Otselic Valley Wall of Fame for his unique and unfailing contributions to our extended school community. When one thinks of good role models for growing students, Mr. Dutton comes immediately to mind. “Jim Dutton was an amazing teacher and community member, giving so much to the school even after his retirement,” said Social Studies teacher Jenny Osowski. “His voice still echoes in the gym for all the games he called. He was a fixture at all sporting events and shows. He will be missed.” The Dutton family cordially invites the public to join a celebration of his life on Saturday, July 10 at 1 pm on the James L. Dutton Athletic Field behind the Otselic Valley school. (Please bring your own chair.) Our heartfelt condolences are extended to his entire family as well as to his students, friends, colleagues, and community members with whom he worked in various organizations.  We have been made better by Mr. Dutton in the same measure that we now grieve his passing. RIP, Mr. Dutton, and thank you for everything.
