Update from Otselic Valley Central School

During the after-school bus run on Thursday, May 30, a driver called for assistance because of an encounter with unleashed dogs.  The bus had paused between stops after low wires pulled off the roof emergency exit, and a dog aggressively approached the driver and aide as they tried to call for assistance.   911 was reached and the bus driver was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Neither the aide nor students were harmed in the incident. Our bus aide worked hard to ensure our students’ safety and help the driver, for which we are very grateful.

Administrators and staff went immediately to the scene to assist. Parents of students still on the bus were contacted and those reached were given the option to pick up their students; the others were taken home on another bus. The Giraffe Bus will have a substitute driver tomorrow and no further delays are expected.

We are working with the local sheriff and dog warden as the investigation continues.

In all situations the safety of our students and staff is paramount so we are especially thankful that people were available to assist so quickly. We also commend our older students on the bus who helped keep younger riders calm and safe. Their careful attention to the needs of others was meaningful, and noticed.

Animal encounters can be unexpected and frightening, and interruptions to a normal ride home can be upsetting. If students or staff need extra support, our counselors at school are ready to help.

Thank you for your understanding.
