National Honor Society with torch, Scholarship, leadership, service, character

The National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society for high school and middle school students at Otselic Valley are about to induct their new classes of outstanding student leaders. They are chosen for more than academic performance because for the NHS and NJHS–the oldest, largest, co-curricular student organization in America–more is required.

Since 1921 when the organization was established in Pittsburgh, PA, appointed members have been charged to demonstrate all four of the NHS “pillars”: scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and service. And more than that, members are expected to continue practicing these honorable characteristics even after joining.

So what do these pillars look like in real life at Otselic Valley?

  • It looks like Vikings who understand the importance of academics and work at it.

  • It looks like Vikings who are leaders holding responsibility in both the classroom and in extracurricular or community activities.

  • It looks like Vikings who are good citizens both in the building and in our wider community.

  • It looks like Vikings who understand the importance of community service, and who practice it.

  • It looks like Vikings you can trust to be honest, full of integrity, and committed to seeking the high road as they interact with others, and who are good role models for both their peers and younger students.

Before each new class of inductees is selected, students are invited to complete a Student Activity Information Form. All forms are reviewed by a faculty council, and sometimes additional interviews are required. Finally the offer of membership is based on a majority vote by the faculty council, and their decision is final.

When the ceremony is held, members past and present are reminded of what they are doing and why, and they share their understanding with those in the audience who witness their intent to work for good in all ways. We are proud of these students and the values they stand for.

Keep going.

All are invited to attend the next induction ceremony at OV on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 5:30 pm in the MPR.
